OUR STORY
Only the church across the road is older.
The Ship began life in the early 1500s as a private house. Five centuries on, it’s a Grade II listed building, and still the heart of the village.
LOCAL LEGEND
Old stories tell of a smugglers’ tunnel running from the pub to the church and on towards the coast. We can’t promise it’s true, but it’s a good one to tell over a pint.
1500s
Built as a private house on an estate known as Stringers.
1639
The house is in the hands of Lord Darcy.
1709
Sold, along with the orchard behind it, to Thomas Joy for £45.
1788
John Cobbold starts supplying the beer, and twelve years later buys the place for £700.
Today
A Grade II listed local, run by the current team since 2022.
